UEFA's refereeing committee has issued a ruling regarding the handball incident involving Cucurella in the quarter-final of Euro 2024
UEFA's refereeing committee has concluded that there was an erroneous decision not to award a penalty for an incident that occurred in the 106th minute of the quarter-final match between Germany and Spain at Euro 2024, which ended 2-1 in favour of Germany.
The incident involved a shot from German midfielder Jamal Musiala, which struck Spanish defender Marc Cucurella's hand in the penalty area. The match official, Anthony Taylor, did not award a penalty for the infraction.
According to UEFA's latest guidelines, any hand contact that prevents a goal-scoring opportunity should be punished more severely. In most cases, a penalty should be awarded under such circumstances, unless the defender's arm is very close to the ball. In this particular incident, the defender's arm was positioned away from his body and appeared to be enlarged, indicating that a penalty should indeed have been given, Relevo reports.
