Ariel Holan has built a team in Asunción for whom defence matters more than attack. In Group F, Cerro Porteño played six matches and conceded only twice. None of those games produced more than two goals. At home, the Paraguayans conceded just one goal across three nights. This is not a lucky streak but their default setting. 

The tournament equation makes the hosts even more cautious. A goalless draw suits them: a penalty shoot-out is a fair chance for a team that is outclassed. Cerro neither need nor know how to open up. In São Paulo, the Paraguayans had eight shots, one on target, and produced 0.25 xG. They have scored six goals throughout the group stage. 

Palmeiras have a different budget and greater squad depth. The Brazilians are top of the league, had 61% possession in the first match and created three clear-cut chances. But Abel Ferreira approaches away knockout matches differently: control, low risk, no pursuit of a second goal. Then there are the personnel issues. Andreas Pereira is suspended, while Ramón Sosa is recovering from a hamstring injury. The very players who moved the ball forward in the final third are unavailable. 

The temptation to back the over stems from the recent 2:3 league defeat to Fluminense and 1.55 xG in the first match. But the Brasileirão means rotation and open football, whereas an away Copa Libertadores match is a completely different discipline. Palmeiras are also better at shooting than hitting the target: seven shots on target from 21. 

These teams are facing each other for the fourth time in 2026. All three previous matches produced no more than two goals: 1:1 in Asunción in the spring, Cerro's 1:0 win in São Paulo, and 1:1 a week ago. The coaches are the same, the squads are almost the same, and so is the approach.
