Review of the bookmaker William Hill from Legalbet
William Hill was founded in 1934 at a time when gambling was illegal in Britain, they grew into a respectable business over the years and at the turn of the century went through a number of corporate takeovers and in 2002 it was admitted to the London Stock Exchange. In 2008 as the internet became more important to operators then their retail operations William Hill merged with Openbet and software company Playtech.
The company operates worldwide, employing approximately 14,000 people with main offices in the UK, Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar, offering betting by phone and Internet together with their 1,568 UK-wide Licensed Betting Offices. They had revenue of £1620m in 2018 and just over £218m in profit.
It has not all been good news though, in 2018, William Hill was fined £6.2 million by the Gambling Commission for systematic failures regarding anti-money laundering and problem gambling.
Odds - Average
We calculated the margin for William Hill by analysing the odds they offer and placed them into one of the following three categories:
From 1% to 5%: Good value
Over 5% to 7%: Average value
Over 7% to 10%: Poor value
We got our results by taking the "Match result" odds and also the over/under 2.5 goals odds for different matches in different football leagues. Getting the average results using this method, we were able to obtain the margins for each league and the overall betting margin for the bookmaker.
William Hill has an overall average margin of 6.53% for football and falls in the average category. In the first section with Premier League and Championship, the margin is at 6.4%. The second section with Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A, the margin is at 5.78%. Finally, taking matches from around the rest of the world into account, the margin is at 7.42%.
Range of Sports and Markets - Good
William Hill offer every major sport and the vast majority of minor ones too, including Beach Volleyball, Handball, Pool, Water Polo and also, we believe uniquely, you can bet on the National Lottery draws of several different Countries, from your WillHill account.
As a leading brand in the UK gambling industry as you would expect William Hill provide a huge range of betting options for every sport which they cover. The main focus is UK Horse Racing and UK Football where the odds are second to none, and the number of betting options is immense.
On an average UK Premier League football game, for example, Sheffield Utd vs West Ham tomorrow, there are 335 betting markets, which is a remarkable amount. It is not just the main events which are well covered though, all Sports at William Hill have expert traders pricing up as many options as you could want, allowing you to bet on the outcomes you are looking for.As an extra bonus for selected markets, William Hill offers a #YourOdds option. They describe this as “our way of making your quirkiest punting premonitions a reality.” To take part you tweet them @WilliamHill with #YourOdds and we’ll try to give you a price on whatever you ask for happening. They do not do it on many games other than UK football but each week you can do it on all Premier League, Championship, League 1 and League 2 matches.
In-Play Betting - Good
The live betting element is great at William Hill mainly due to all the extra additions to the bets, namely the WHTV service allows you to watch top-quality sports events in real-time and high definition quality, during In-Play matches. There is also a radio service where you can listen to live commentary and helpful tips.
To watch their live streams, horse racing excluded, you need a funded betting account or to have placed a bet within the last 24 hour period. To watch horse racing at William Hill you need to have bet a minimum of £1 on the race, a 50p e/w bet would qualify.
Basketball, Football, Cricket and Tennis are the main live sports you’ll be able to view, and the live UK and Irish Horse Racing of course, but other sports are also available. To see the full schedule visit williamhill.com and click ‘WHTV Schedule’.
The “In Play” betting area itself covers almost all sports but focuses on Football and Tennis markets. Each event is well catered for with a large range of betting options, not just win/lose/draw. You can cash out most events too, which is a feature not available at many sites.
As well as streaming many events the “In play” area provides many of the current game statistics and useful info allowing informed bets. This is a feature William Hill have done much better than most of the competition.
