On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Deportes Tolima will host Independiente del Valle in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores Round of 16. The match at the Manuel Murillo Toro Stadium in Ibagué will kick off at 01:30.
The match was originally scheduled for August 11, but CONMEBOL postponed it by a week following an earthquake in Colombia. The break affected the two teams differently: Tolima were left without any competitive matches, while Independiente del Valle defeated Delfín and extended their winning streak.
The last Ecuadorian opponent Deportes Tolima faced was Independiente del Valle. This was in the group stage of the 2022 Copa Libertadores. The Colombian side picked up four points across the two matches.
So what is the issue? Were Deportes Tolima poor in the current group stage, or are they now struggling in Colombia’s Primera A? There are reasons for that. They picked up only eight points in a group that contained no club from either Argentina or Brazil. They were surpassed by Chile’s Coquimbo Unido (16 points), who reached the Copa Libertadores after 34 years. At the start of the local Clausura, the Ibagué side are third with three wins from four rounds. Luis Sandoval should be one of the hosts’ main threats, but his one goal in five matches so far cannot compare with his scoring output in the spring.
Ecuador does not split its championship into halves, and Independiente del Valle had no trouble qualifying for the Copa Libertadores knockout stage. They currently lead the domestic Serie A by a huge margin of 20 points and also won their continental cup group with 13 points from a possible 18. Away from home, however, they have been less impressive, winning just one of three matches. Overall, Independiente del Valle have won only one of their last 10 Copa Libertadores fixtures, conceding in nine of them.
Deportes Tolima are not the bookmakers’ favourites, but Independiente del Valle can hardly be called favourites either, as their odds have risen above 2.50. Still, it is worth remembering that the Colombian side scored in both matches in 2022, which helped them avoid defeat. We should now take the same bet, despite the Ecuadorian club’s strength in the domestic league.
