Kazakhstan drew with Armenia in Yerevan last Saturday (1:1). It seems that this season the team are producing respectable results, yet rumours have emerged that Talgat Baysufinov will be removed from his post. This morning the KFF issued an official statement that the information being spread does not correspond to reality – the federation fully trusts the coach.
Hungary are preparing for the match under Marco Rossi. The Italian has been in charge of the national team for eight years already. The team have not played at World Cups since 1986, but Rossi has taken Hungary to two European Championships in a row (2020, 2024). The Hungary squad is fairly old: at least 10 players called up are already 30 or older. But it was Barnabas Varga from this "veterans group" who scored twice and earned the team a 2:1 win over Finland on Friday. And of course the Magyars will again rely on their leader Dominik Szoboszlai, who is still quite young – he is 24. He provided the assist for Varga.
So what exactly is wrong with Kazakhstan for rumours about a coaching change to emerge? This year the team have picked up seven points from a possible nine, even if those points are only symbolic because the games were friendlies. Under Baysufinov the Hawks did not concede more than one goal in four official qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, when he was still interim head coach. One of those matches was against Belgium. In the others, against more manageable opponents, the team used an attacking 4-3-3 system.
So Kazakhstan can quite reasonably hope for a decent result. Back in spring 2018, the Kazakh side also won away to Hungary, 3:2. Backing Kazakhstan with a small positive handicap looks the optimal choice.
