The time will soon come when Poland play any of their matches without Robert Lewandowski. There were rumours that the Barcelona forward had announced his retirement from the national team after failing to qualify for the World Cup on the final day of March. That was because of his social media post.
There was a post, but without words. Only music. If you saw it, you really could have thought that. However, there was no official statement. The only statement concerned Barcelona. In the recent friendly against Ukraine, we again saw the No. 9 in the white-and-red shirt. But Jan Urban, of course, especially in unofficial matches, will give playing time to less experienced players as well. Mateusz Zukowski came on in his place for the second half. The 24-year-old Magdeburg centre-forward made his debut for the senior national team.
Nigeria, meanwhile, saw themselves at the World Cup, but DR Congo spoiled everything by beating them on penalties in the final of African qualifying. However, we should not forget that after that failure Eric Chelle's team won bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations, beating Egypt, with Mohamed Salah in the side, in the consolation match. The Super Eagles have enough strong players, in the literal sense of the word, as well as experienced ones who are ready to cope with a fairly average European national team. An experimental line-up dealt with Jamaica easily the day before (3:0).
Poland will not have it easy against Nigeria. In home matches, they do not score that many goals — even against Malta in spring 2025 they scored only twice (2:0). So alongside double chance on the hosts, it is worth choosing under.
