Aarhus
On Tuesday, 21 July, the first leg of the second qualifying round of the Champions League between Aarhus and Lech Poznan will take place at Cepheus Park Randers in Randers. The match will kick off at 18:00 BST.
The newly crowned Danish champions begin their Champions League qualifying campaign against an extremely tough opponent. Bookmakers give the Scandinavians a slight edge in the odds to progress to the next round, but Lech Poznan are far too good. The Polish club have already opened their season with an emphatic win.
A powerful finish to last season, with a run of three wins, brought Aarhus their long-awaited title. One of Denmark's oldest clubs became Superliga champions for the first time in 40 years. The friendlies went according to plan for Poulsen's side — they lost only to Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise (1:2), and in their most recent match they beat AC Horsens (2:0). On the other hand, the Scandinavians have personnel problems — Jonsson, Tchamche and Gyamfi are injured, which will shorten the bench. Aarhus need the ball: the three-centre-back system (3-4-2-1) guarantees defensive problems if the Danish champions do not control the game. Poulsen's staff will lean on home support, but his team are not in the same form as their opponents.
Lech Poznan are gradually taking the status of the country's leading club away from Legia Warszawa. The team from Poznan led the last Ekstraklasa campaign almost throughout, finishing it with 62 goals in 34 matches — only Jagiellonia Bialystok also passed the 55-goal mark (56). In the Super Cup last Thursday, the Blues tore apart Gornik Zabrze's defence (3:1) — 1.93 xG, 14 shots and excellent form from Kozubal (1+1). Lech Poznan have kept the core of their main attackers — Ishak, Walemark, Rodriguez and Palma are still looking strong here. This quartet are involved in the first wave of pressing — the ball does not often reach the goal of the team from Poznan.
Frederiksen's men are clearly ahead of their Danish opponents in total market value — EUR 56.3 million against EUR 33.9 million. Aarhus have not played a competitive match for more than two months, while Lech Poznan have already shown how good they are in major games. We are backing the Polish champions to win.
