Anderlecht
On Thursday, 30 July, in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round, Belgian RSC Anderlecht will host Swedish Hammarby at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. The match will kick off at 19:30 (BST).
After the first leg the tie remains level — it finished 1:1 in Sweden. For RSC Anderlecht that cushion is very promising in terms of progressing further.
The first away trip did not go all that well, even though RSC Anderlecht still brought home a perfectly acceptable 1:1. In Sweden Danylo Sikan scored an early goal, but then Vitor Bruno’s men dropped back towards their own box and even went down to ten men: Nathan Saliba received a second yellow in the 78th minute. After that they basically had to hang on. At home the purple-and-whites play completely different football — they overload the flanks, switch on from the first minutes and do not hold back at all. The midfield will have to be reshuffled because of the suspension, but the stands will drive them on. And the Belgians score regularly and in volume at home: in six of nine home matches since 2024 they have scored at least twice.
The visitors will come to dig in and wait for their chance. Hammarby’s season is in full swing, their legs are fresh, and before this trip they put together three league wins in a row. True, they then followed that up with an away draw. In the first match the green-and-whites outshot their opponents and earned their late goal. But it is one thing to dominate at home and quite another to fly to Belgium. On other grounds the Scandinavians concede regularly: just two clean sheets in their last six away matches. Under intense pressing their defence will creak.
RSC Anderlecht will immediately take the ball and start pinning their opponents back in the box. Hammarby will be left to break away in rare counter-attacks and hope for set pieces. In their entire history the Brussels side have never lost at home to Swedish teams in European competition — one need only recall last summer’s win over BK Hacken (1:0). The quality of players here is simply higher, and the home stadium will make up for the difference in physical condition.
The hosts should take this match and go through. The visitors will battle, but they are unlikely to last for the full 90 minutes — the gap in quality will tell. We will not take the risk of backing the straight home win, but an option with insurance looks ideal.
