Ararat-Armenia
On Tuesday, 21 July, Ararat-Armenia will host Shamrock Rovers in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The match at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in Yerevan will kick off at 17:00 BST.
Shamrock Rovers had an easier opponent in the first round, so we have not seen their true strength. The Irish champions will face serious competition in the quarter-finals of Champions League qualifying.
This is a classic three-way match, with Ararat-Armenia having a slight edge because of home advantage.
Ararat-Armenia, unlike Shamrock Rovers, do not have regular competitive rhythm: the Armenian championship starts only after the end of the second qualifying round of the Champions League. But one match a week is a comfortable pace. The key to reaching this stage was a home win over Riga FC (2:0) in hot Yerevan. The Armenian champions managed not to lose their composure after a poor start in Latvia, where the red and whites were 0:2 down by the 24th minute. Manuel Tulipa's words at half-time fired up the team, and they pulled one goal back in the first minute after the restart. So Ararat-Armenia need to secure at least a two-goal margin, which means they will take the ball and try to break down their opponents' compact defence.
Shamrock Rovers did not have to overexert themselves in the first round because they were facing Maltese club Floriana FC (5:3 on aggregate). True, they relaxed so much at the start that in Dublin they had to recover a two-goal deficit after their trip to the Mediterranean island. A 5:1 scoreline is unlikely in the return game. Ararat-Armenia's heaviest away defeat in European competition came last summer against Sparta Prague (1:4), but the Prague club are hard to compare with the Irish champions. They even won in Yerevan (2:1).
The plus for Shamrock Rovers is that they have been in rhythm for a long time, but the minus is that they are not used to the heat. The weather also affected the result of their lost away match against Floriana FC — it was +32 degrees then. A similar temperature is expected in Yerevan in the evening. So the best bet looks to be a handicap (0) on the hosts, if you do not fully believe in their success.
