On Wednesday, 15 July, FC Atert Bissen will host KÍ Klaksvík in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round. The match at the Stade de Luxembourg kicks off at 19:15 BST.
The combined squad value of the two teams barely exceeds 5 million euros. This is almost the cheapest tie in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
KÍ Klaksvík have far more experience in European competition and in the UEFA Champions League in particular. Of course, this mainly means the qualifying rounds. FC Atert Bissen have become national champions for the first time in their 81-year history, so they will host foreign opposition on their own pitch for the first time.
The first meeting in the Faroe Islands clearly showed the difference in class and style. The experienced blue-and-whites from Klaksvík focused on physical pressure and total dominance in the air: KÍ Klaksvík scored both goals with headers, one of them coming after a precise free-kick delivery. The opposition defenders were simply losing aerial duels, but kept the tie alive thanks to an absurd mix-up near the visitors' goal early in the second half. Pulling one goal back has noticeably changed the balance of power ahead of the second leg.
The bookmakers do not see a clear favourite in this pair for the return match, which is why the odds on all three main outcomes are extremely close. A narrow one-goal advantage forces the visitors to act more carefully. At the same time, the FC Atert Bissen players will have to open up and take risks in front of their own fans, hoping for attacking creativity from Tiago Rodrigues da Costa and the experience of captain Roman Ferber. That makes calling the result extremely difficult, as the tie could be decided by a single moment, such as another well-worked set piece.
Nevertheless, international experience and the ability to manage the scoreline in stressful situations should help the Faroese side hold on to the advantage they have earned. FC Atert Bissen will try to take control of the ball at the Stade de Luxembourg, but KÍ Klaksvík know how to suffer defensively and make opponents pay for tactical mistakes. Most likely, we are in for a scrappy game in which pragmatism prevails over the emotions of the modest debutants.
