Bet on the match
Egnatia have already shown at home that their European matches can easily turn into open contests. In Champions League qualifying, the Albanians thrashed Petrocub 6:1 before drawing 3:3 with Celje. There were 13 goals across the two home matches. After losing 3:1 in Dublin, the hosts now need to make up a two-goal deficit, so a cautious approach will not suit them.
The first leg also provided plenty of evidence for the over. Shamrock Rovers created 25 chances, scored three times and missed several more good opportunities. Two goals came from corners — Egnatia defended poorly in the air and lost track of players in their penalty area. The Albanians still found a goal of their own, and before that they had scored two or three goals in each match of the tie against Celje.
The Irish side have greater match sharpness. They are defending their title, lead the Premier Division and moved 10 points clear after beating Dundalk 3:2. Jonathan Afolabi strengthened the attack in the summer and scored against Dundalk on his debut. Graham Burke and Aaron Greene scored in the first leg against Egnatia, while Jack Byrne remains their main set-piece provider.
A 3:1 scoreline is only comfortable for Shamrock on paper. If the visitors surrender possession completely, they will invite pressure on their own penalty area. It makes far more sense to exploit the spaces and look for a goal that would almost settle qualification.
Four of Egnatia's five European matches this summer have produced at least three goals. There is also the tournament situation to consider: the hosts need to open up from the first minute, while the visitors have already shown they can punish them both in open play and from set pieces. Over 2.5 looks justified by both the numbers and the second-leg scenario.
