On Tuesday, 14 July, Riga FC will host FC Ararat-Armenia at Skonto Stadium in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, with kick-off at 18:00 BST.
Riga FC have made their task much harder after losing the first leg by two goals. The spell after the 70th minute proved especially costly: the team picked up a red card and conceded a second goal.
At qualifying-round level, the UEFA Champions League is not too different from the UEFA Conference League, where Riga FC have mostly played in recent seasons. They have been coached for a year and a half by foreign specialist Adrian Gula, who led the club to their first title in five years. The Slovak coach uses a system with one striker in all his teams. At Riga FC, Gambian forward Mohamed Badamosi usually leads the line. He has already scored 15 goals in the Latvian league, but has so far had hardly any chance to show himself at European level, and he also received a yellow card in the previous match.
FC Ararat-Armenia have not been champions for six years, and now, under Portuguese coach Manuel Tulipa, the club are gradually reviving their winning traditions, with the team barely losing. The efforts of one striker are often enough to achieve success.
In the first leg, Brazilian forward Sandro Lima played up front, but other foreign players made the decisive contribution to the result, Hugo Oliveira and Carlos Franca: much of the team's play is built around them.
At times Tulipa drops the team into a deep defensive shape, a 5-4-1 system, as he did, for example, in a recent league match against FC Noah Yerevan. However, that tactic does not always work: in that game, FC Ararat-Armenia suffered a heavy 0:4 home defeat.
The visitors will attack, albeit with one eye on their defensive duties. The technique and international experience of their Portuguese and Brazilian players should be enough for them to score at least once.
At the same time, Riga FC have not failed to score at home since October 2025, with that domestic run now standing at 14 matches. In addition, in the UEFA Conference League, the Riga side have been scoring against opponents since 2024, a run that has already lasted four matches. So both teams should find the net in the upcoming meeting.
