Fenerbahce
Fenerbahce and Gornik Zabrze open the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League: the first leg will take place on 21 July at 19:00 (BST) at Istanbul's Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
The hosts will be looking to book their place in the next round at home, so the main question is not who wins, but by how much.
Ismail Kartal has returned to Fenerbahce for a fourth time and has been given the most expensive squad in the club's history. This summer they brought in Vedat Muriqi, Nathan Ake and Mason Greenwood — the Englishman cost a club-record fee (40 million euros). The new signings were not included in the squad for the matches against Gornik Zabrze, but the gap in class is still huge: up front there are Marco Asensio, Talisca and Kerem Akturkoglu, while at the back is captain Milan Skriniar. The Turkish side came through their July friendlies without a single slip-up: 11 goals in three games — 5:0 against Admira Wacker, 4:0 against Pogon Szczecin and 2:1 against LASK.
Gornik Zabrze travel to Istanbul in less than ideal shape. On 16 July, the team lost to Lech Poznan in the Polish Super Cup (1:3), and Jaroslaw Kubicki injured his arm there and was substituted in the first half. His involvement in the match remains in doubt. In the previous game, Philipp Schulze was in goal and is likely to start again. Leader Lukas Ambros has been sold to Anderlecht, while Erik Prekop and Kacper Urbanski are still getting to know their team-mates. And the main thing is the level: the Polish side have not played in the Champions League since the 1988/89 season.
Fenerbahce will take the ball, pin the visitors back around their penalty area and repeatedly put pressure on the rebuilt defence. Gornik Zabrze have the quick Maksym Khlan for counter-attacks, but here the Polish side will have to spend almost the entire match chasing without the ball. The Istanbul side have not lost for almost three months and are counting on returning to the main stage of the Champions League, where they have not played since the 2008/09 season.
The bookmakers have closed the question of the outcome: a home win is priced at 1.29, and there is no value in the straight home victory. Fenerbahce (-1.5) is 1.55, while Gornik Zabrze (+2.5) is already 3.10. The -2 line is a workable middle ground: a two-goal win gives a refund, a rout gives a win. That is exactly the kind of football Fenerbahce have shown throughout July.
