FK Sabah
In the opening match of the first qualifying round of the Champions League, Sabah will host The New Saints from Wales at the Bank Respublika Arena in Masazir. Kick-off is at 17:00 BST on 7 July.
Qarabag's successful season in the Champions League had a side effect - the leader of Azerbaijani football did not become champion, so Sabah will start in the tournament qualifiers.
Sabah made their European debut in the summer of 2023, and three seasons later reached qualifying for the main continental tournament - the Champions League. For The New Saints, or TNS, in turn, this is not their first attempt at the Champions League: the club have been trying since the 2000/01 season.
The hosts approach their debut in Europe's main club competition in excellent spirits after a historic title. This summer, the Baku club strengthened selectively: the contracts of defender Tymoteusz Puchacz and winger Veljko Simic, who spent the whole of last season in Azerbaijan on loan, were bought out. The Serb even finished as the Azerbaijan Premier League's third-top scorer, scoring 11 goals and providing 11 assists. At home, the Owls traditionally rely on aggressive pressing from the opening minutes, and the factor of the home stands in Masazir will help the team seize the initiative from the first seconds of the match.
The Saints from Wales dominate domestically, but they regularly experience huge difficulties in away European matches: of their previous 13 over the past four seasons, TNS have won only one match - against Lithuania's Panevezys - and drawn twice. The opponents were from leagues that are far from Europe's leading championships. Among The New Saints' reinforcements, the arrival of defender Danyel Simeu - a Chelsea academy product who came through Southampton's youth system - is about the only one worth highlighting. The team based in Oswestry will almost certainly sit deep in their own half, but it will be incredibly difficult for the Welsh side to withstand the early pressure of the more technical hosts for all 90 minutes.
The bookmakers quite rightly do not even believe in a draw for the visitors, rating the hosts' chances very highly. The difference in class is obvious, so the home side will try to build a significant advantage before the return visit: it is worth backing at least a minimal Sabah handicap.
