Floriana
Floriana will host Shamrock Rovers at the Centenary Stadium in Ta' Qali in the first leg of the Champions League first qualifying round. The match kicks off at 18:30 BST on 7 July.
Shamrock Rovers will have an advantage even away from home, because the Irish league does not even stop for the World Cup, while Floriana have not played an official match since May.
It has always been difficult not only for Floriana, but for any Maltese club, to get through even the first qualifying round, let alone reach the group stage. Despite the country's noticeably larger size, clubs from Ireland have not performed much better for many decades.
Floriana had not reached Champions League qualifying for six years, because they had not been champions of Malta since the 2019/10 season. But in the season that ended a couple of months ago, Daniel Portela's team won the league title - the 27th in their history, but only their second in the 21st century. Last European season, the Green and Whites only managed to reach the second qualifying round of the Conference League. They did not lose at home once (one win and one draw), but conceded in both matches. A year earlier, they also conceded in both home games.
Shamrock Rovers are not only continuing to play in the summer, but their matches are also being rescheduled to ease a packed summer calendar. They have taken part in the Champions League more often than any other club from Ireland (13 times). More precisely, in qualifying: they have only managed to reach the third round once. They missed last season, but before that Stephen Bradley's team had represented Ireland in the Champions League for four years. He has been in charge of the Hoops since 2016 - it will soon be 10 years. This is the most stable club from Ireland in the 2020s. They have only been stopped by champions from countries such as Slovakia, Bulgaria, Iceland and the Czech Republic.
Floriana cannot compete even with teams from countries like those. Last European season, in the Conference League, they did not suffer a single home defeat, but their opponents were teams from Wales and Kosovo. Shamrock Rovers should clearly break through the Maltese side's defence, which is highly likely to bring them victory. In only three of their 10 Champions League qualifying matches across their previous four attempts did Shamrock Rovers keep a clean sheet - two of those came against Malta's Hibernians (3:0 at home and 0:0 away). So the better choice here is Draw No Bet on the visitors.
