On Tuesday, 14 July, ETO FC will host Vikingur Reykjavik at ETO-Park in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round. Kick-off is at 18:00 BST.
ETO FC would have found it much easier to play at home had they not conceded the only goal as late as the 92nd minute. Even a straightforward win in the return leg will not be enough.
The score is only 1:0 in Vikingur Reykjavik's favour, but in essence ETO FC got away with one in the first leg. The Hungarian side should treat that outcome as a gift and try to make the most of it.
In the match in Reykjavik, the ETO FC players spent most of the time pinned back near their own goal, whether because of the opposition's pressure or for tactical reasons. They only managed to push the game away from their penalty area after the 60th minute.
ETO FC's main problem is a lack of team experience in European competition. Over the past 10 years, the club have only played in European competition once — last season, when they entered UEFA Conference League qualifying.
They came through two rounds then and were stopped only in the play-off round, which was a decent result. Home wins by two-goal margins played an important role: for example, ETO FC even beat Rapid Vienna at ETO-Park (2:1), although they ultimately failed to progress.
In effect, Vikingur Reykjavik let themselves down by failing to convert their clear advantage into goals in the first hour of the game. The Icelandic side repeatedly had attempts on goal: they hit the target eight times, but only scored late on. Their chances included efforts against the post and the crossbar, as well as several spectacular and effective saves from the visitors' goalkeeper. The goal eventually came from Vikingur Reykjavik's aerial superiority, and that is likely to be one of their main weapons in Hungary as well.
With fervent backing from their supporters, ETO FC perform noticeably better at their home stadium. If they do not waste chances and play with the same focus Vikingur Reykjavik showed in the first meeting, they have every chance of winning.
It cannot be ruled out that the match will drag on and go to extra time, but ETO FC's prospects look convincing. They are priced below 2.00 to win, so the bookmakers are clearly leaning towards the Hungarian club.
