The recent meeting between these sides on 27 September is still fresh in the memory: Republic of Ireland tore through Israel’s defence on their way to a 3:0 win and a clean sheet. The circumstances are much the same now: the same neutral venue in Bačka Topola, Serbia, empty stands and similar conditions, with little reason to expect a flurry of goals from both sides.
Republic of Ireland favour a pragmatic approach and know how to control a match. The statistics bear this out: fewer than four goals were scored in 9 of their previous 10 UEFA Nations League matches. They are adept at slowing the tempo and stifling opponents’ attempts to build momentum.
Israel have persistent problems in attack. In their last 10 UEFA Nations League games, they have never managed four or more shots on target, and in 8 of those 10 matches they scored no more than one goal. Israel’s defence regularly struggles under pressure, with opponents consistently flooding their penalty area in 9 of those 10 matches, while their own attacking output remains modest.
The one possible concern is the general trend towards high-scoring games involving Israel, with the over landing in 8 of 10 matches. Even so, those goals have usually stemmed from their defensive failings rather than a potent attack.
Given how hard the nominal away side find it to create chances, at least one team keeping a clean sheet looks a solid option.
Prediction: Both teams to score – No at 1.90.
