On Tuesday, 21 July, KI Klaksvik will host FK Kauno Zalgiris in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The match at Vid Djupumyrar will kick off at 19:45 BST.
KI Klaksvik got past the Luxembourg champions fairly confidently, but their next opponents, Lithuania's FK Kauno Zalgiris, could prove an insurmountable obstacle for the Faroese side.
KI Klaksvik are dangerous at home for most clubs, even those from major countries. In the previous Champions League qualifying campaign, they snatched a stoppage-time win over Malmo FF (3:2). True, the Swedish club had already all but secured progression with a 4:1 home rout. Since 2024, the Faroese champions have won seven of their eight matches at Vid Djupumyrar. In the eighth, they drew with HJK Helsinki (2:2), but the Finnish side only salvaged it in the 92nd minute.
So FK Kauno Zalgiris need to prepare for pressure from opponents who attack fairly aggressively. Several thousand spectators will drive them forward from the opening minutes, while a gusty wind unfamiliar to the visitors will blow in from the Atlantic Ocean. The Kaunas side did secure their place in the second qualifying round away from home, beating Kosovo's FC Drita (3:2), but over their last five attempts this is a rare exception: across seven other matches, they have only beaten Valur Reykjavik (2:1) in Iceland in 2025. The Green-Whites failed to beat Penybont FC of Wales (1:1), who have little European experience, or Bulgaria's PFC Arda Kardzhali (0:2).
And KI Klaksvik are one of the leading teams in the Faroe Islands, a side who rarely miss out on European competition, so they certainly have experience. The stadium's specific location on the Atlantic coast will help the hosts win.
