Lech came into the season as back-to-back Polish champions. In the last campaign they won their tenth Ekstraklasa title, taking 60 points from 34 rounds and finishing four points clear of Gornik Zabrze. In the summer Niels Frederiksen’s side added the Super Cup, coming from behind in a match against the same Gornik (3:1). Their class is beyond dispute.
But the start of the competitive home season was laboured. In the opening Ekstraklasa round Lech failed to break down Cracovia — a goalless 0:0 on their own pitch. Mikael Ishak and Patrik Walemark tore the Danes apart away from home, and a few days later the same attack ran into a Polish mid-table side. Motivation is a very specific thing: in Denmark they were playing for qualification, in Poznan they will be playing for the record.
Frederiksen has no need to push his players. The third round and a far stronger opponent lie ahead, and Alex Douglas and Ali Gholizadeh are already out injured. Rotation, saving legs and calm control of the ball — that is the whole plan for the second game.
AGF Aarhus are no pushovers either. The Danes won the Superliga for the first time since 1986, taking 67 points from 32 rounds. The heavy scoreline in the first meeting was largely down to Jesper Hansen’s dismissal: the visitors spent almost an hour defending with ten men. In 11 vs 11 Jakob Poulsen’s team are very disciplined, and they opened their Superliga campaign with a 1:1 draw against Brondby.
The Danes will not be able to overturn a three-goal deficit away from home and they know it themselves. So there will be no storm from the first minutes: a compact block, rare raids through Tobias Bech and an attempt to save face. The hosts will be saving their energy, the visitors will be protecting their goal. In such a setup, a draw at 3.72 is the most underrated option on the coupon.
