Although Neftchi is considered the favorite in the first tie due to home advantage, the chances of advancing to the next round are practically equal for both teams. The Azerbaijanis need to secure a solid cushion tomorrow.
The upcoming Azerbaijan championship does not start until mid-August, but Neftchi needs to hit the ground running right now. They skipped the first qualifying round of the Conference League, so they prepared through friendly matches. However, the last of these was played by Yuriy Vernydub's team the weekend before last against Croatian side Osijek (0:1). This was already the third consecutive match for the Baku team in which one of the sides failed to score. The Ukrainian specialist will, as usual, play with four defenders, a reinforced midfield (two defensive anchors), and a single lone striker upfront. The target man role was filled by Slovakian Ľubomír Tupta, who moved to the black-and-whites this summer from Greek side AEL. Everything is being done to concede as rarely as possible.
Dinamo Minsk, on the other hand, underwent its first European test of the year in North Macedonia. They exchanged 1:0 away wins with Sileks, so the fate of the tie was decided in a penalty shootout, where the Belarusian team's players did not miss a single time (6:5). On the road in domestic competitions, Aleksandr Shagoiko's team has been unbeaten for nine matches, drawing only once. They even defeated the champions, ML Vitebsk. But if we look at all European away matches since 2024, the game with Sileks is one of only two exceptions: they lost in the other eight. Moreover, they managed to score in only one instance.
So it is not for nothing that Neftchi is the favorite. The inflated odds on their victory are actually somewhat surprising. Presumably, the fact that the Belarusian championship is played all summer virtually without a break plays a role. But this will not help Dinamo—the hosts' squad is one and a half times more expensive.
