On Thursday, 23 July 2026, Qarabag FK will host CSKA Sofia in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round. The match at the Azersun Arena in Baku will kick off at 17:00 BST.
The Bulgarian league has already started, while Azerbaijan's domestic campaign is still some way off, so CSKA Sofia will have the advantage in terms of real match practice.
Almost every season, Qarabag FK make waves in Europe when they are still around in the autumn, but this time it will only be the Europa League. That makes their chances of going through even higher. Away from home, CSKA Sofia have very little chance of winning, or even drawing.
Their successful Champions League campaign had a side effect. Energy is not unlimited, and after the Round of 32 in European competition there was none left for the domestic league. They finished only second behind Sabah. There will be less money coming in, so Qarabag FK sold Camilo Duran to Celtic, the forward who scored five of the team's 16 goals in the Champions League. However, the funds received from the sale of their top scorer allowed them to buy five quality but inexpensive foreign players. At home, Gurban Gurbanov will continue to demand maximum commitment from his players and attacking football.
CSKA Sofia's biggest signing of the off-season was centre-forward Joel Zwarts, who scored for Lokomotiv Plovdiv every 144 minutes in last season's Bulgarian league (eight goals). But CSKA Sofia's main attacking force in the Europa League first qualifying round was not the Dutchman, but Ioannis Pittas, who scored three of the team's five goals against Derry City. He carried them last season as well. But the Bulgarian club's problem is that their last European campaign came three years ago, when they bowed out with a 0:6 aggregate defeat to Sepsi, a side who are not that well known even by Romanian standards.
The five goals against Derry City should not mislead us or Qarabag FK about CSKA Sofia's capabilities. Qarabag FK conceded a lot at Europa League level, but against clubs such as Ajax, Lyon and FCSB. Their next opponents clearly do not belong in that top group. A home win looks a comfortable bet. Even a small handicap should work.
