Red Bull Salzburg
The first leg of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round between Salzburg and Cypriot side Pafos will take place 6 August 2026 at 18:00 BST at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg.
For Pafos, this is a historic moment — for the second year in a row, the team could play in European competition. After their previous UEFA Champions League campaign, the Cypriots have gained experience, while Salzburg remain regulars on the European stage, even if they have not made it into the UEFA Champions League this season.
Salzburg remain one of the continent's most experienced clubs in European qualifying ties — the Austrians have regularly reached group stages over the past decade and a half, and there is no doubt about their status as favourites in this tie. Especially given the team's form. In the opening round of the Austrian league, they edged past Hartberg (1:0), but had 36 shots and a total xG of 4.11.
Pafos have been led since April by Portuguese coach Ricardo Sa Pinto, who favours a 4-2-3-1 system with a strong emphasis on Brazilian players in attack. Given their almost total lack of experience at this level, the trip to Salzburg itself will already be a serious challenge for the team. However, the team had an excellent transfer campaign in the summer, strengthening several key positions for next to nothing. For example, loanee Bilu scored two goals in three games.
The hosts will charge forward from the first minutes, but last season we learned that Pafos are no whipping boys. The Cypriot side will certainly respond with counter-attacks, so it is logical to expect plenty of goals from this tie.
