Shamrock Rovers
On Tuesday, 14 July 2026, Irish side Shamrock Rovers and Maltese side Floriana FC will meet in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round. The match kicks off at 20:00 BST at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin.
The first meeting in Ta' Qali ended in a shock victory for the Maltese club (2:0). In Ireland, Shamrock Rovers will have to go flat out to save their European campaign, while Floriana FC will try to hold on to the advantage they earned.
The Irish club, who have a huge advantage in match sharpness because their domestic league is in full swing, unexpectedly collapsed away from home. In Malta, the Hoops had 54% of possession, but conceded just before half-time and were then reduced to ten men in the second half after Matthew Healy was sent off. At home in Dublin, Shamrock Rovers are a completely different team. The hosts have lost only once in their last eight matches at Tallaght Stadium. The return of defensive leader Roberto Lopes will be a major boost for the Irish side, adding reliability at the back and confidence at attacking set-pieces.
The Maltese side produced the biggest shock of the start of qualifying. The team underwent a radical squad overhaul in the off-season and did not play a single official or friendly match in preparation, but punished the favourites through strict discipline and clinical finishing. Goals from Robert Muric and Mustapha Jah gave them a comfortable cushion before the trip to Dublin. Even so, holding that lead away from home against a powerful, athletic opponent will be extremely difficult. Floriana FC's defence, half of which is made up of new signings, has not yet been tested by such aggressive pressure from the opening minutes.
The result of the first match obliges the hosts to throw everything into attack from the start. A full week of recovery has allowed Stephen Bradley's players to analyse their tactical mistakes. At their own stadium, Shamrock Rovers know how to wear opponents down through superior physical power. The visitors will sit in a deep defensive block, trying to preserve their advantage, but the Maltese side will not be able to withstand Irish pressure for the full 90 minutes.
