The New Saints
On Tuesday, 14 July, the second leg of the Champions League qualifier between The New Saints and Sabah FK of Baku will take place in Oswestry at Park Hall. The match will kick off at 18:30 BST.
The Azerbaijani champions made a lively start to their international campaign — a home win (2:0) was a confident opening to Champions League qualifying. On their own pitch, the Welsh side will try to put up resistance, but Valdas Dambrauskas's team are in excellent shape mentally. The visitors are unlikely to lose control of the game.
Despite poor pre-season results (two draws and one defeat), Sabah FK played all their friendlies against strong opponents — teams who made it into European qualifying. At home, the Baku side overwhelmed The New Saints with aggression in midfield — the favourites had three times as much of the ball (75% to 25% possession) and seven times as many shots (14 to 2). Yes, the goals took a long time to arrive, but Dambrauskas's players fully deserved them — Veljko Simic registered a goal and an assist, while Kaheem Parris came off the bench and scored seven minutes after his introduction. Sabah FK have a clear playing structure with two holding midfielders — the players further forward join the press, but are more geared towards creation.
The New Saints tried to stay within touching distance on the scoreboard, but still made mistakes in the second half. Perhaps Craig Harrison's staff overestimated the attacking 4-3-3 system — they should have switched to a five-defender shape much earlier. On the other hand, the Welsh side simply do not have the resources to compete actively with Sabah FK — the islanders are worth almost six times less (€2.6 million against €17.6 million).
The New Saints' plan will again be based on counter-attacks — switching the ball out wide, quick long balls forward from the centre-backs and minimal risk in short passing. Sabah FK will not slip up away from home: Dambrauskas's team have a comfortable advantage and can increase it even before half-time. The Azerbaijani champions' stars will again take their chances through sheer quality, while the Baku side are also dangerous from set pieces — chances will keep coming.
