Tottenham were left frustrated by a draw with Leicester, but the Premier League newcomers showed their mettle. In contrast, their next opponents, Everton, must be totally disappointed. They are deservedly at the bottom of the table. Do they have any chance of getting points?
Tottenham completely dominated the first half at the King Power Stadium, holding 73% possession and taking 10 shots compared to Leicester’s one, but only converting one chance. New signing Dominic Solanke, acquired for €64 million, got many passes, but none of his three shots on target resulted in a goal. Tottenham also posed a threat from free kicks and corners, with 8 of their 15 shots coming from them. The team should try to shoot more from any distance, instead of passing too much in the penalty box. Brighton adopted that strategy against Everton and succeeded.
The match against Brighton turned into a disaster for Everton. All three goals they conceded resulted from dreadful mistakes, both in midfield and defence—not Premier League quality. They allowed their opponents to dominate possession for 63% of the match and take 10 shots, with 3 of the 5 on target ending up in the net. To make matters worse, experienced Ashley Young was sent off, adding to an injury list that already includes half a dozen players, including captain Seamus Coleman. Resources are severely lacking. There have been few new signings, and Youssef Chermiti, who has just arrived from Sporting, is also injured.
Matches between Tottenham and Everton are often entertaining. In the last seven seasons, there has only been one goalless draw, and Everton’s last victory was in February 2021 (5:4). Last season, they drew 2:2 in Liverpool, while Tottenham won 2:1 at home. The last time Everton took points away from home was in the 2020/21 season (1:0). They will have to sit back in defence, but that is not their strong side right now. We expect the host to win in a high-scoring match.
