Víkingur Reykjavík
In Reykjavik, the second leg of the Europa League third qualifying round tie between Iceland's Vikingur and Switzerland's Thun will be played 13 August 2026 at 13:30 EDT / 10:30 PDT.
The intrigue has practically gone from this tie: in the first game in Switzerland, Thun thrashed the Icelandic side 3:0, and now the hosts face the almost impossible task of overturning a three-goal deficit.
Vikingur dominate the domestic league — after 17 rounds, they have 14 wins, two draws and just one defeat, with a 56:14 goal difference. However, the standard of the Icelandic league and European competition are completely different: in Champions League qualifying, they comfortably beat Gyor but then lost to Hapoel, while against Thun they managed to resist for only 19 minutes.
Thun sensationally became Swiss champions last season — the first title in the club's history (75 points from 38 rounds, 80 goals scored). However, the start to the new season has been mixed: a convincing 3:1 away win over Luzern was followed by a 0:6 home thrashing by Young Boys, which raises questions about the Swiss side's defensive reliability.
Given the visitors' enormous advantage, we should not expect them to play attacking football. They are quite likely to try to manage the game. In that case, Vikingur will have a chance to at least partly make amends to their fans. We think they are quite capable of keeping a clean sheet and perhaps even winning.
