When & Where Is Eurovision 2023?

The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 takes place in the United Kingdom, in a break with tradition as it is usually the winning country that hosts the following year's competition. However, Eurovision 2022 winners Ukraine are unable to host this year due to the ongoing war in their country, so second place UK offered to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 on their behalf.

How Does The Eurovision Song Contest Work?

Since 1956, countries have competed annually in the Eurovision Song Contest.  Each country performs an original song to represent their country during a live television programme, which is broadcast simultaneously to all countries.

Since 2008, each Eurovision Song Contest has comprised of three live TV shows held in the space of one week. Across two semi-finals, the ten highest-scoring entries from each qualify to compete in the final, alongside Eurovision's 'Big Five'; the five countries who make the biggest financial contribution to the contest: France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The 'Big Five' and the winning country from the previous year all gain automatic entry into the grand final, amounting to 26 countries competing.

All countries perform their songs again in the grand final, which begins with an opening act and a flag parade. Once all countries have performed, there is an interval act, usually featuring someone well-known from the host country, while the voting process takes place. At the end of voting, the scores are delivered and the winner is announced, with the winning song being performed again to close the show.

Eurovision Voting

Once all songs have been performed, viewers vote for their favourite performances. Votes can be placed via telephone, text message or the official Eurovision app. Viewers can vote for any country, other than their own. The public vote accounts for 50% of the final result, with the other 50% being voted on by a jury of music industry professionals from each country.

After the interval act, the voting results are announced. In the semi-finals, the top 10 highest-ranked countries are announced in a random order. In the final, a representative from each country takes it in turns to reveal the results of their country's jury's deliberations, while the results of the public vote are announced by the Eurovision presenters. Each country's jury awards between 1 and 12 points; the points from 1-8 and 10 are displayed on screen and added automatically to the scoreboard. After that, the country's spokesperson announces which country will receive the 12 points.

Once all of the juries have declared their votes, the presenters then announce the public votes received by each country, with the public votes from all countries being added together and announced as a single value, at which point the winner is announced.
