Gauff Becomes Youngest Player Since 2002 to Defeat World No. 1 and No. 2 at WTA Finals
At just 20 years old, American tennis prodigy Coco Gauff has made history as the youngest player since 2002 to defeat both the world number one and number two at the WTA Finals.
On November 8, Gauff overcame Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the current world number one, with a scoreline of 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Earlier in the group stage, she triumphed over the world number two, Polish player Iga Świątek, winning 6-3, 6-4.
Back in 2002, Belgian Kim Clijsters, aged 19 at the time, achieved a similar feat at the WTA Finals by defeating the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, who were ranked first and second globally.
In the WTA Finals 2024, Gauff is set to face Chinese contender Zheng Qinwen.
