Sonay Kartal beaten by Maya Chwalinska in Wuhan final

Britain's Sonay Kartal was denied a maiden WTA 1000 title after suffering a 2-6 6-4 6-2 defeat against Poland's Maya Chwalinska in the final of the Wuhan Open. Kartal had opened up a lead of a set and a break before the French Open finalist recovered to secure the victory.

Victory would have made Kartal only the second British player to claim a WTA 1000 title after Johanna Konta. The run to the final marked the best week of Kartal's career, coming just weeks after she returned to the tour following a six-month absence caused by a back injury.

  • Sonay Kartal defeated Jelena Ostapenko in the Wuhan semi-finals, while Maja Chwalinska reached the final by beating fellow Pole Iga Swiatek.
  • Kartal entered the final ranked 170th and Chwalinska 22nd, setting up the first Wuhan title match between two players outside the top 20 since 2014.
