Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Portsmouth look intriguing among the Championship giants, but it's still not enough for them to secure wins. They need to climb out of the relegation zone, but Burnley, who recently defeated equally strong Leeds United, stand in their way. It seems that Portsmouth will be an easy prey for them.
Burnley
The victory over Leeds United was unexpected. After a rocky period following a strong start, Burnley appeared inferior on paper and in practice to the Yorkshire side. Leeds United's players had complete control (71% possession), created chances (1.24 xG and 17 shots), but Burnley stood firm. They, on the other hand, needed only 7 (3) shots and 0.66 xG. The team tends to falter, but this mostly happens away from home. At home, they have recorded a convincing 5:0 win over Cardiff City and a 1:1 draw with Blackburn Rovers, where they kept nearly 80% possession and took 16 shots.
Portsmouth
Even a draw will be hard for Portsmouth to achieve. One can recall the first round when the newcomer nearly secured a win at Elland Road against Leeds United, leading 3:2 in the 92nd minute, but believing in a repeat against another favourite is tough. They have conceded 11 goals in 5 rounds, the worst record.
Burnley vs Portsmouth Prediction
Only one match involving Portsmouth this season ended with the total under 2.5, when Luton Town played with ten men for about an hour. That was also the only match in which they did not concede. In contrast, Burnley's last four games have been low-scoring, but on Saturday, Portsmouth's yielding defence will tip the scales, resulting in a home win and a high-scoring match.
