The Washington Capitals fell to the New Jersey Devils in the opening match of the NHL season

In the opening match of the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, the Washington Capitals fell to the New Jersey Devils. The contest, held at the Capital One Arena in Washington, ended with a final score of 3:5. 

Shining for the victors were Seamus Casey who scored at the 13th minute, Paul Cotter with goals at the 16th and 33rd minutes, Tomas Tatar at the 23rd minute, and Dawson Mercer at the 59th minute. The hosts retaliated with goals from John Carlson at the 10th minute, Dylan Strome at the 20th minute, and Tom Wilson at the 41st minute. Washington Capitals' Russian forward, Alexander Ovechkin, contributed an assist.

Following the match, Washington finds itself positioned 15th in the Eastern Conference with no points claimed so far, while New Jersey, with six points to its credit, leads the Eastern Conference table.

Up next, the Capitals are set to face the Vegas Golden Knights on the 16th of October, whilst the Devils will host the Utah Jazz on the 14th of October.
