First, a little history; Germany and Spain are the most successful countries to have won the Euro, with three titles each. Spain is the only country to have won the competition twice in a row, in 2008 and 2012. Conversely, the most successful the England national team has ever been at the competition was at Euro 2020 (actually played in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic), when they lost to Italy in the final, on penalties.
Euro 2024 is being hosted by Germany, with matches being played across ten cities: Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart. As the host nation, Germany will play the opening game of the tournament against Scotland. Germany (or West Germany) have played at every Euro since 1972, winning in 1972, 1980 and 1996. While German attacker Thomas Müller has scored an impressive ten goals in 19 FIFA World Cup appearances for Germany, he is yet to score at the European Championship.
Could Portugal be the country to watch at Euro 2024? They won all ten of their qualifying games, and conceded only two goals in the process, while scoring 36 themselves. They also won Euro 2016, so victory is not exactly a distant memory for them.
France have the most goalscorers from the qualifying stages of the competition, with 14 players hitting the back of the net. Nine of them scored once, while Mbappé scored nine all by himself. No doubt France will be praying that he stays fit for the duration of the competition.
England’s Harry Kane is only one goal behind Kylian Mbappé, as he scored an impressive eight goals for England during qualifying. England topped their qualifying group with 20 points, six ahead of second-place Italy, who they lost to in the Euro 2020 final. No doubt the England squad is feeling like they have something to prove after last time, which they have shown in qualifying. Let’s see if they can continue that trend into the tournament, starting with their first match on 16th June.
