Liverpool overturn two-goal deficit to defeat Villarreal
Liverpool preserved their perfect start to the Champions League campaign after recovering from a two-goal deficit to earn a 4-3 victory over Villarreal at Anfield. Andoni Iraola's side fell behind early on following defensive lapses that allowed Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona to give the visitors a commanding lead inside the opening half hour.
The hosts mounted their recovery through Alexis Mac Allister's header and Ronald Araújo's equaliser on the stroke of half-time, before Mac Allister struck again and substitute Florian Wirtz extended the advantage after the break. Although Tani Oluwaseyi volleyed in a late third for Villarreal, Liverpool resisted the closing pressure to take all three points.
- Liverpool made six starting changes against Villarreal, bringing in Kostas Tsimikas, Ryan Gravenberch, Trey Nyoni, Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas.
- Victor Munoz missed Liverpool's match against Villarreal after wearing a knee brace against Brentford, while Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo were ineligible for the Champions League.
