Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to set up Bournemouth cup tie

Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties at Anfield on Wednesday to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they will face Bournemouth. Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo scored from the spot in normal time as the match finished 1-1.

Joe Gomez put Liverpool ahead in the shootout before Wesley Fofana sent his effort over the bar to settle the tie. Chelsea's Emmanuel Emegha had earlier had a chance to win it in sudden death, but Giorgi Mamardashvili saved his penalty. Kostas Tsimikas also shot over with a chance to win it for Liverpool, while Ryan Gravenberch and Valentin Barco failed to convert.

Liverpool had won all four previous shootouts against Chelsea: the 2007 Champions League semi-final, the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final and the FA Cup and League Cup finals in 2022.

  • Before Chelsea's Carabao Cup visit to Liverpool, Xabi Alonso confirmed that João Pedro had suffered a thigh injury in training and would be unavailable for a few weeks.
  • Chelsea striker Emmanuel Emegha had recovered from a hamstring injury and was available before the Liverpool cup tie, having joined from Strasbourg that summer.
