Birmingham appoint John Murtough as director of football

Birmingham City have appointed former Manchester United football director John Murtough as their new director of football. The 55-year-old replaces Craig Gardner, who left St Andrew's in June.

Murtough will start work on Monday, following Birmingham's Championship game at Cardiff City this weekend. Chris Davies' side sit fourth in the table after three consecutive wins since the international break.

• Atalanta appointed Murtough as director of global development on 15 April 2025, with immediate effect, under sporting director Tony D'Amico.
• Manchester United appointed Murtough as their first football director on 10 March 2021, overseeing football strategy and operations across the men's and women's teams and academy.
