Vincent Kompany expected to be absent for weeks after collapse

Bayern Munich expect head coach Vincent Kompany to be absent for weeks as he continues hospital treatment for a virus after collapsing at training on Friday. Sporting director Max Eberl told Saturday's press conference that Kompany remained in a stable condition, with examinations continuing to establish the nature of his illness.

Eberl said Bayern would give Kompany all the time he needed and would discuss a recovery timetable once his condition had been identified. Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge for Sunday's Bundesliga match away to Freiburg on 25 October.

Danks said he had spoken briefly to Kompany on Friday to check on his health, without discussing football. Bayern did not consider seeking a postponement of the Freiburg match, although their second team's game was postponed on Friday after Kompany's collapse. Danks also confirmed that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, on bereavement leave since Tuesday, would miss Sunday's game.

  • Aaron Danks joined Bayern as an assistant coach in July 2024, having previously worked alongside Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht during the 2021/22 season.
  • Bayern were top of the Bundesliga at the start of the weekend with 14 points, level with Borussia Dortmund and one ahead of Freiburg and Leverkusen.
