“I drank a lot.” Adriano reveals Inter wanted to send him to a psychiatric hospital
Former Inter Milan and Brazil forward Adriano shared how the club’s management once considered sending him to a psychiatric facility.
“After my father passed away, alcohol became my only companion. I drank heavily and started showing up late to training sessions. The club tried to keep it all under wraps from the press. I was fined, but it didn’t bother me because I was making a lot of money. Then the president of Inter, Massimo Moratti, got involved. He said, ‘Adri, I want to tell you something. First of all, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. This happens to many people. I want to suggest that you go to a very special place.’”
He was referring to a rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland, to which I replied, ‘I’m not crazy. With all due respect, why do you want to send me to a psychiatric hospital? Have you ever seen a player sent to rehab?’” Adriano told Corriere della Sera.
Adriano played for Inter from 2001 to 2002 and then from 2004 to 2009. The Brazilian retired from football in 2016.
