Kimmich on potential strike: “I can understand every player”

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has commented on the possibility of a player strike due to the congested match schedule, noting that he does not perceive an issue with a more packed calendar.

It is important to remember that this season, European competitions have adopted a new format, increasing the number of group stage matches from six to eight. Additionally, clubs finishing between ninth and 24th in the league phase will also have to contest two playoff matches for a spot in the Round of 16. In the summer of 2025, the Club World Cup will, for the first time, feature 32 teams.

"For me personally this is the first season where there will be more games - with two more games in the Champions League, possibly 4 (playoffs) and the Club World Cup in the summer. In England they have more games with more teams in the league, a League cup and no winter break. I personally enjoy playing a lot of games, but I can understand every player that says it's too much. I think it's individual for each player," Kimmich stated, as reported by Bayern&Germany.

Previously, other players, such as Ballon d’Or winner and Manchester City midfielder Rodri, along with Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal, have also spoken out about a potential strike due to the demanding fixture list. They have received backing from fellow players and coaches.

During the current season, Joshua Kimmich has made 16 appearances for Bayern in all competitions, providing four assists. The 29-year-old midfielder's contract with the Munich club runs until the summer of 2025.
