Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the English Premier League match.
For Manchester United fans, a promising scenario seems to be unfolding: Tottenham Hotspur could drop points in the North London derby, and with a victory over Southampton, the team would not only reclaim their lost 13th position but also surpass West Ham United. However, are Southampton ready to accept this outcome?
Manchester United
Arsenal's progress in the epic FA Cup third-round clash (1:1, pens. 5:3) was thrilling, yet it's time for Manchester United to turn their attention back to the league, where they haven't secured a win in four encounters. It's not just that they've failed to win—they've only picked up a solitary point. They're closer to the relegation zone (7 points) than to the European places (12 points). However, Manchester United should be glad, as the team have dealt confidently with relegation-battling sides this season, thrashing Leicester City (3:0), Everton (4:0), and Southampton (3:0). Their only slip-up came against Wolverhampton Wanderers (0:2), but that was due to a series of unfortunate circumstances.
Southampton
The Southampton management decided to take bold action. Despite deep gratitude towards Russell Martin for guiding the club up to the Premier League, they dismissed the manager. Ivan Jurić, brought in as his replacement, has yet to make an impact. Southampton have lost to teams far from the top of the table: West Ham United (0:1), Crystal Palace (1:2), and Brentford (0:5). A resounding FA Cup victory over Swansea City (3:0) doesn't compare to these setbacks.
Manchester United vs Southampton Prediction
A team that stood firm against Liverpool and Arsenal in January should comfortably overcome the main candidate for relegation. Expect a win for the favourites with a handicap.
