Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of only three clubs to have won both of their recent matches in the Premier League. However, this has not yet lifted them off the bottom of the standings. Brentford, by contrast, have been collecting points at a steady pace and are hovering close to the European places.
Brentford
Perhaps Brentford are not especially focused on qualifying for Europe, or they may be hoping that one of the four sides above them in the standings, all still involved in the FA Cup, will win the trophy so that they can quietly secure a European spot from seventh place. They have just been eliminated from the FA Cup themselves, suffering a 2:3 defeat against West Ham United. Winning only one of their last four matches is a dangerous run. A large part of the team's results have depended on the goalscoring instinct of Igor Thiago, who has 18 goals, but he has found the net only twice in the last eight league rounds. The team's overall attacking output has declined accordingly: they have scored more than one goal in only two of those matches, and only in those two did the total goals exceed 2.5 goals. It is no coincidence that he scored in both of them.
Wolverhampton Wanderers
They are still involved in the relegation battle, but if the current 13-point gap to 17th place remains, in four matches' time the club will already be planning for life in the EFL Championship. They have not only won twice around the turn from winter to spring, but did so against strong opposition: Brentford's immediate neighbours above them, Aston Villa (2:0) and Liverpool (2:1). The drawback is that both victories came at home. Away from Molineux Stadium they have not won at all, with four draws and ten defeats. Rob Edwards' side are dropping points because their attacking output has fallen sharply: instead of scoring 18 goals over a comparable earlier spell, they have managed only five.
Brentford vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Prediction
Four of the hosts' previous five home matches have seen the under 2.5 goals bet land, as have all five of the visitors' most recent away games. The only high-scoring exception was also the only victory between the two clubs in that combined sample: Brentford beat Sunderland 3:0. It looks safer here to back the under 2.5 goals.
