First time since 2008? The Spurs have a chance of winning a trophy this year!

The Europa League title is what Tottenham can get.

Tottenham’s spectacular victory over Manchester United in the EFL Cup with Son’s corner kick goal blew the dust off one simple question painful for the Spurs and hilarious for the others: will Tottenham win a trophy this year? Let us carefully analyse this traumatising question for the Spurs fans and predict their chances in various tournaments.

Premier League

Is it impressive to have a +14 goal difference after 17 rounds? Not quite, but it’s a good number. Is it a failure to have eight losses after these rounds? Again, not quite if your name is Everton, Brentford, or even Manchester United. But for Tottenham, it is. Their fans may forgive 3:4 against Chelsea or even 3:6 against Liverpool, but not 0:1 against Bournemouth or especially the home defeat 1:2 in the match versus Ipswich Town. The Spurs weren’t hopeless in these games, but they definitely lacked effectiveness (1.55 xG with Ipswich Town), poor performance in the center, and instability in the defensive zone. Micky van de Ven is not in his best shape, Radu Drăguşin is just a catastrophe: Three of his errors in defense in just 10 Premier League games led to an opponent’s attempt and to a goal missed. Do you still think that Forster was the only problem?

Considering that Manchester City’s chances of winning are now vague, there’s absolutely no discussion about Tottenham’s. They will be lucky to get to the European cups qualification zone with their current performance. By the way, it will be a decent achievement for the Spurs, considering that they have done it just three times in the last five years.

EFL Cup

Reaching the semifinals is already cool. The thing is, none of the remaining opponents are weaker than Tottenham. Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle — wherever you look there is a serious challenge. Arne Slot’s machine will be the semifinal opponent and probably that’s enough to say that there are almost no chances for Tottenham to win the EFL Cup. The only hope is for Liverpool to play with reserve players: no Salah or Diaz on the pitch. But even then, there’s no confidence in Tottenham: Forster, Drăguşin, van de Ven’s game is not flawless. The quarterfinal against Manchester United is a reminder.

Not only defense concerns Ange Postecoglou, but attack also. In the middle of December, after the Europa League draw against Rangers (1:1), the coach criticized Timo Werner for his lack of effectiveness:

His performance in the first half wasn't acceptable. We need everybody, including him, to be contributing because we don't have the depth to leave people out if they perform poorly. I expect a level of performance from some of the senior guys, and tonight wasn't that.

Still, if you are a hardcore Spurs fan, hate “In Bruges” movie, or just somehow believe in them, bookmakers offer pretty interesting odds. Anyway, since 2008, this has been the last significant trophy that the Tottenham players have raised over their heads.

Europa League

As Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bournemouth, or even Ipswich Town are not in this tournament, what could possibly scare Tottenham? As it turned out, a lot: Galatasaray, Rangers, and Roma already made the Spurs lose some points. But still, it will be a huge failure if Tottenham end up outside the top-8 by the end of the league stage, as they will face Hoffenheim and Elfsborg in the remaining rounds. Currently, Postecoglou’s team is ninth, two places behind another Great Martyr — Manchester United.

If there’s a trophy where Tottenham has the biggest chance of winning, it’s this one. Hard to imagine what could possibly stand in their way. Every team that is ahead of the Spurs now may be challenging to pass, but not impossible: Lazio, Athletic Bilbao, Anderlecht, Lyon, Eintracht, Galatasaray and even Man United — none of these teams as scary as Arne’s Slot machine, who even hopes that Ange will get the trophy:

I hope, hope, hope that he wins a trophy - not the League Cup, but I am completely a fan of his team for the Europa League..

The last time Tottenham played in the Europa League, they lost to Dinamo Zagreb in the round of 16. So, basically, the danger can come from somewhere you might not expect. But still, Tottenham is the biggest favorite among bookmakers.

The FA Cup is yet to start, so it’s too early to build predictions for this tournament.

Of course, the famous quote from “In Bruges” will be relevant even after this season. To break it, Tottenham have to do something like Klopp’s Liverpool in 2019/20, Wenger’s Arsenal in 2003/04, or Ferguson’s Man United in 1998/99. But at least the Spurs do have chances of winning their first significant trophy since 2008.
