Court sentences Rennes player to probation for fatal collision with woman on electric scooter

Rennes forward Mathis Lambourde has received a suspended sentence for fatally colliding with a woman while riding an electric scooter.

According to L'Equipe, the Rennes court sentenced the 18-year-old footballer to two years of imprisonment, suspended for involuntary manslaughter. Lambourde acknowledged his guilt and expressed "deepest apologies" to the family of the deceased. It has been reported that a civil trial will take place in October next year to determine the amount of damages the forward must pay for the harm caused.

In July, it was revealed that Lambourde had been arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter. The Rennes player, riding an electric scooter with a passenger who is also part of the Breton club's academy, struck a 51-year-old woman at a speed of approximately 20 km/h. The victim succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

Mathis Lambourde has been part of the Rennes system since 2021. In January 2023, he signed a professional contract with the club that lasts until the summer of 2026.
