Barcelona president Joan Laporta has explained the reasons behind Ilkay Gundogan's departure from the club.

In August, the Catalan club released the German midfielder to Manchester City on a free transfer.

«Ilkay Gundogan is an excellent player and person. We had a fantastic season together with him. After meeting with Hansi Flick and assessing the situation within the team, he decided he wanted to leave. This was exclusively a sporting decision.

With the arrival of Dani Olmo, we brought in a player who could perform similar functions to those of Gundogan.
