Liverpool goalkeeper comments on increased number of matches following Champions League expansion

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has spoken out about the increased number of matches following the expansion of the Champions League.

"I think for the fans, it’s amazing. More games, bigger matches, big clubs playing against each other. For us players, it’s always nice to add a few more games to a packed schedule. I’m joking a bit here.

Nobody asks the players what they think about more games, so perhaps our opinion doesn’t matter. But everyone knows what we think—everyone is tired of it.

We understand there’s media, TV. There’s UEFA, FIFA, the Premier League, domestic tournaments. We’re not stupid and understand that people want more games. But it would be sensible if all those responsible for organizing the calendar sat down together and listened to all sides, including the players. We just need to be heard, and to understand in which direction football is developing.

Ultimately, all we want is to give our best. If you’re tired, you can’t compete at a high level. I want to give my best in every match I play. But we need to find a solution, and it doesn’t seem like we’re close to finding a suitable answer for football and the players," Alisson told The Guardian.

Starting from the 2024/25 season, the Champions League will be held under the "Swiss system." The main European club tournament will now feature 36 teams, which will play 144 matches throughout the season.
