Southgate: "I plan to take a break and then move forward"

Former England national team manager Gareth Southgate has announced that he does not plan to return to work anytime soon.

"I’m not going to rush into anything. I’ve got lots of opportunities, I'm very open-minded to what's next. That might be in football, that might be outside of football. I'm just going to take some time, refresh, recharge and go from there.

I think at the moment people know that I need to get my energy back. I had an incredible eight-year journey with the team, it was an absolute privilege to be manager of my country. I worked with brilliant players, and a fantastic staff," Southgate told Sky News in an interview.

Gareth Southgate led the England team since 2016. Under the 54-year-old's guidance, the national team reached the European Championship finals twice in a row. In the Euro 2021 final, England lost to Italy in a penalty shootout (1-1, 2-3 on penalties), while in the Germany tournament they were defeated by Spain with a score of 1-2. Southgate stepped down from his role as head coach of the national team in July.
