Tottenham Hotspur player Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged following a joke about Son Heung-Min

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged following a joke he made about his teammate Son Heung-Min, for which he has since apologised. This was reported by TalkSport, citing a statement from the Football Association (FA).

Earlier, on a Uruguayan TV show, host Rafa Cotelo asked Bentancur for Son Heung-Min's shirt, to which Bentancur responded, "Sonny's shirt? That could also be Sonny’s cousin... they all look alike."

The statement asserts that the Uruguayan footballer breached FA rules. This violation is considered serious as it involved improper conduct, the use of offensive or abusive language, and damage to the game's reputation.

Moreover, the breach is deemed aggravated as it included an explicit or implied reference to nationality, race, or ethnic origin. Bentancur is required to respond to this charge by 19 September 2024.

The maximum suspension for such an offence is 12 matches.
