The Indiana Pacers are dangerous when they score before their opponents can get back on defence. But fast-paced basketball alone does not guarantee 240 points. The Philadelphia 76ers have looked strongest defensively early in the season: they concede few points and force opponents to find shots under pressure. What matters more, then, is not the number of possessions, but how many end with a made shot.
Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers have already had some impressive scoring performances: 123 points against the New Orleans Pelicans and 136 against the Brooklyn Nets. But that is not the whole story. They managed just 105 points against the Dallas Mavericks and 102 in their latest game against the Milwaukee Bucks. In the fourth quarter of that game, the Pacers made just four of their 22 field-goal attempts. Tyrese Haliburton and Pascal Siakam combined for 42 points, but it was not enough. The game against the Philadelphia 76ers will be the Pacers' third in four days, and injuries have already affected the squad. The hosts know how to play at pace, but they are not yet shooting consistently.
Philadelphia 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers opened the season with three wins, but their offence is also far from flawless. Across four games, they have averaged 110 points scored and 107 conceded. Three of those four games finished under 240.5 points. Their game against the New York Knicks produced a combined 206 points, and the meeting with the Cleveland Cavaliers yielded 220. Their latest game against the Detroit Pistons was even more revealing: a defeat (93:106), difficult shots and few opportunities to get out on the fast break. It is not that the 76ers play slowly. They still stall too often on offence when their opponents have time to set their defence.
Indiana Pacers vs Philadelphia 76ers Prediction
Three of the last four meetings between these teams fell short of 241 points, with combined totals of 220, 217 and 199. The exception was February's game, which produced 249. For this game to go over the current total, the Indiana Pacers will need to improve their shooting accuracy significantly, while the visitors will need a more consistent offensive performance than in most of their opening games. There is little reason to expect both improvements at once. Overtime remains a risk for any under bet, so a points cushion is needed by the end of the fourth quarter. There are grounds to expect precisely that scenario here.
