Adam Williams presents his prediction for the Champion of Champions match.
One of the most intriguing first‑round ties is John Higgins vs Xiao Guodong. Both have already won major events this season, and their head‑to‑heads are often closely contested.
John Higgins
The snooker legend comes into this match in excellent form. Over his last 10 matches he has suffered only two defeats — to Judd Trump (in Belfast) and Wu Yize (in the final of the International Championship). John Higgins is match‑sharp: during the Asian swing he played nine matches in 14 days, compiling 14 century breaks and 27 breaks of 50+. His average highest break was 132, reflecting a stable attacking level. The only question is physical freshness after the final in China and long flights, but his touch is at its peak.
Xiao Guodong
Xiao Guodong defended his title in the summer. Since that victory his form has dipped slightly: recent tournaments brought defeats to Anthony McGill (2:4) and Zak Surety (1:6). The Chinese player still relies on an attacking style — long visits and risk‑taking from safety. However, his accuracy has fallen: over his last 10 matches — only nine breaks of 50+ and no century break. That is a concern before facing Higgins.
John Higgins vs Xiao Guodong Prediction
Head‑to‑head meetings favour John Higgins, although the most recent in July ended with a win for Xiao Guodong. The balance now swings back towards the Scot: his consistency and scoring level look superior. Both are comfortable in tactical exchanges and can clear in a single visit when offered a chance. Each of the last four meetings featured at least two century breaks. We expect another match with multiple heavy‑scoring visits.
