Víkingur Reykjavík
On Tuesday, 21 July, Vikingur Reykjavik will host Hapoel Beer Sheva in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The match at the Vikingsvollur Stadium in Reykjavik will kick off at 20:00 BST.
Despite missing a host of chances, Vikingur managed to reach the second round, while Hapoel Beer Sheva are only just beginning their European campaign.
Vikingur played with fire in the previous round against ETO FC, but an away draw allowed them to avoid even extra time. Their next opponents, Hapoel Beer Sheva, have not played in the Champions League for a long time.
Vikingur are building on their successful previous season, when they became champions of Iceland and are currently top again. In 2025, they stopped in the third qualifying round of the Conference League: they were halted by Danish side Brondby IF (3:0, 0:4). ETO FC are not such experienced European campaigners, but they still caused problems. At the Vikingsvollur, Solvi Ottesen's team had 21 shots, with every third effort on target, but they only managed to score in added time. They were fortunate to get through in Hungary. Overall, though, the Icelandic side approach home matches as a dominant force. They are comfortable in the cool polar summer, when the temperature does not rise above +15 degrees.
The Israelis should also be comfortable, though, because that is better than running around in +40. The journey, however, should take its toll on them, even if they arrived a few days before the game. The team from Beer Sheva became champions after an eight-year wait. They finished second a couple of times, but something was missing. Now Hapoel Beer Sheva have taken advantage of Maccabi Tel Aviv's workload in the Europa League. The Camels have been regulars in European competition for several years, but mostly in the Conference League, where the opposition are easier. Last year's campaign ended in late July with elimination by Greek side AEK Athens in the Conference League. Back then, they failed to score a single goal across two matches (0:1, 0:0). They also failed to score away to their previous opponents, Levski Sofia, in the Europa League (0:0).
Given the poor finishing against ETO FC, but also Vikingur's 100% home record across their last five European home matches at their own ground, and Hapoel Beer Sheva's zero away goals, at least a draw for the hosts and no more than three goals between the teams clearly look likely here.
