Adam Williams presents his prediction for the Friendly International rugby match.
These are two teams that have been struggling in recent years, and they will meet in Cardiff. The hosts have equalled their worst losing streak and could make it eleven consecutive defeats if they lose to the Wallabies in this match.
Wales
The dismal record stands at ten consecutive defeats for Wales. This streak began in the World Cup playoffs, continued through the Six Nations Championship (losing all five matches), and persists in the tests (four losses). Following their eighth defeat in July to the same Australian side on the road (16:25), Wales dropped out of the world’s top 10 rankings for the first time in history. In their latest loss to Fiji (19:24), the Welsh have only themselves to blame. Despite having a two-man advantage for at least eight minutes, they not only failed to extend their lead (14:3) but also conceded a try with conversion. How much lower can they go?
Australia
The Wallabies have seemed to be in a downward spiral as well. After failing to get out of their group in the World Cup, they won all four of their summer test matches, but these were against lesser opponents. In the Rugby Championship, they barely managed to defeat Argentina away (20:19), losing all of their other five encounters. Before the match against England, Australia were also not seen as favourites, yet they proved they could not be underestimated. Trailing throughout the first half, the visitors kicked a penalty in injury time to lead at the break (20:18). The second half was a constant back-and-forth, but in the final attack during the 82nd minute, the Wallabies found a gap in the English defence, and Ben Donaldson secured their victory. It was a pleasant surprise.
Wales vs Australia Prediction
The contrasting impressions from last week add to Wales' two summer test losses to Australia: apart from the 16:25, there was also a 28:36 defeat. It seems likely that we will witness a new record of misery for Wales.
